Live Performance Review - Thrones! The Musical Parody

Thrones! The Musical Parody is a great love letter to diehard fans of the TV Show (both past and present) who want to relive some of their favourite moments while also laughing off their frustrations with how the show ultimately declined in quality towards the end. Thrones! The Musical Parody premise involves a group of Game of Thrones super-fans using their friend Linda’s place as the venue for the surprise finale-viewing party. Linda, who is recently heartbroken after going through a divorce, has never seen the show before and is horrified when her friends start reenacting for her key moments of the show with props found throughout her house. Surprisingly, one of the things I cannot un-see after this viewing is how you can make a black, Night's Watch tunic with a set of black toilet rugs!

There is a lot to enjoy in Thrones! The Musical Parody, but probably only for those who have seen the original TV Show or are at least somewhat familiar with the plot (likely the majority of people anyway). There are some gags that do a great job of utilising both the lore of Game of Thrones and jokes within the fandom, this includes giving the middle finger to the die-hard fans of the books (such as myself) and a rap parody of the most famous scene in the series, ‘The Red Wedding’. There were some misses in the gags, such as the arguably unavoidable but tired Trump joke when the characters are at the Wall. But those were fairly small moments, and the parody moves at such a fast pace that the misses don’t have time to linger.

The songs and lyrics were also very well done and delivered by a cast who were able to do a great caricature of the roles they were portraying. My personal favourite has to go to the spot-on Jon Snow/Kit Harrington impression that nails his mannerisms perfectly! The production also has time to wrap up some loose ends by giving everyone in the audience a fanfiction rewrite of how Game of Thrones should have ended with a final boss-style fight with George R.R Martin!

Thrones! The Musical Parody brings back nostalgic memories of the excitement of waiting for the next episode of Game of Thrones to come out and bringing your friends over to have a watch-along party. But this isn’t just a nostalgia bait production, there are legitimately great performances, jokes and musical numbers in this one, well worth watching with friends. Thrones! The Musical Parody is playing at the Alex Theatre, St Kilda until June 21.
